You might be thinking “I don’t need to learn this stuff. These clients aren’t any different than the 30 and 40 year olds I already train. Right?” WRONG. I assure you that they are, and you need to train them differently or you won’t ever get them to buy.


Think that this means working with crotchety old geezers who do nothing but complain, talk about how things were better “in the good old days”, and discuss their latest bowel movement issues?


I understand because I used to be just like you until my career-altering “aha” moment which taught me that this is NOT TRUE.


You see as a kid I didn’t spend much time around anyone at all over the age of 55. Both my grandfathers died when I was really young. My dad’s mom died not too long afterwards and my mom’s mom we didn’t see that much. So I had very little exposure up until the now infamous nursing home incident. You see, my youth group decided to visit the local nursing home to socialize, sing some songs and cheer up the residents. I had never been to one before.


I carried this vivid and rather traumatic memory with me to grad school in exercise science. Since the program was a clinically based one of our responsibilities as students was working in the cardiac rehabilitation program on campus. If you have any experience with cardiac rehab then you know it is full of—you guessed it—- older adults. Talk about being nervous. I kept thinking back to that nursing home and I swear I could still smell that awful smell.
